In any business, there is paperwork that goes with the day to day operations. Over time, this paperwork becomes useless but continues piling up. It’s important that every business adopts a strategic plan that will enable them properly dispose paper documents. It’s also important that your business adopts the best way to dispose the paper documents to ensure that sensitive information is not shared with the wrong people.
Most offices use a paper shredder to cut the paper into pieces before dumping them, however, the information can still be pieced together. Just dumping the papers in a bin and eventually to the dumpster will put you at risk. Identity thieves thrive on dumpster diving to get information from paper work that has been carelessly disposed.
It’s important to adopt methods of paper document disposal that will ensure that the information on the paper is properly destroyed.
You can use a furnace to destroy large amounts of paper documents. This can be done either in the premise or outside. There are also miniature furnaces that can be used to destroy a bin full of paper by burning. Burning is only effective if it’s done properly. Do not be in a hurry, feed the papers slowly and making sure that they are separated for complete burning. A large stack may prevent proper burning or slow down the process. Most cities do not permit burning within the limits without permits. It’s therefore important to make sure that you do a background check on the laws touching on fire disposal.
Cutting and punching
Sometimes you may need to destroy a small amount of paper. You can cut the paper with a pair of scissors or punch holes in the paper using a paper punch. The punching can be done particularly where the information to be destroyed is written. This should only be done for a small amount of paper as it is time consuming.
Water ink and paper are strange bedfellows. There are different approaches to this depending on the amount of paper to be disposed. If the amount of paper is not large, you can use a zip lock bag to soak the paper into water. Put some water in the plastic zip lock bag then put in the paper. Leave it to sit for a while then go ahead and squeeze the water from the paper to make pulp, you can then dispose in a bin. The more the paper documents to be disposed, the more the water to be used. This can even be done in a bath tub.
Hire a disposal company
At times, the amount of paper to be disposed may be too large for you to handle. There are waste disposal companies that have tailor made services for disposal of paper documents. Needless to say is that this comes at a fee but think of all the time and energy this service provider will save you. When looking for a paper document disposal service, make sure you get a company with proper credentials and a vote of integrity. You should also look at what options they will use.
Whatever option that you may choose to use, the most important things to consider are;
- The practicability of the method. Ask yourself how effective is the method you want to use.
- The laws that touch on the method that you choose to use, especially concerning fire.
- The amount of paper that you want to destroy and also the information contained that you want to get rid of.
Whatever you do, functionality is what you should look for.
