What is Upcycling?

Will you be doing any spring cleaning this weekend? Before you throw away your old belongings – why not give some of your old things a second life?  Upcycling is a great way to reduce your impact on the environment and reuse some of your home’s items.

What is Upcycling?

Upcycling is the process of taking your old things and turning them into something new. Unlike recycling which breaks products down into their raw materials, to be reused to create something new, upcycling gives an old item a new life.

Upcycling allows people get get creative!  Try turning an old newspaper into a biodegradable flowerpot or turn an old t-shirt into a children’s dress.  Here are a few upcycling ideas to consider.

  • Makeover your clock with paint chips – This IKEA hack is a great way to get crafty with your household items. Use leftover pain chips to create a unique design that matches the look and feel of your room. Find the tutorial here.
  • Turn old pillow cases into garment bags – Instead of using a plastic garment bag, why not upcycling an old pillow case into a beautiful new one? Try this tutorial to make your own.
  • Turn empty wine bottles into a chandler – With a few empty wine bottles, sturdy chains and a lot of patience, you can make a truly unique chandler out of your old wine bottles.
