October is Energy Action Month!

iStock_000006425445_MediumOctober is Energy Action Month!  This month, we take the time to rethink the energy use in our home – both in an effort to reduce our impact on the environment and help save money on home energy bills.  While turning off a light switch may seem obvious, other ways to reduce energy use might not be – like recycling!  Here are a few ways you can reduce energy this month.

Home Energy Checklist:

  • Turn down your water heater temperature.  It should be set to 120 degrees F.
  • Unplug equipment when it’s not in use.  Cell phone chargers, coffeemakers, microwaves and more can use energy when they’re plugged in and not in use.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to give yourself better control over the temperature and comfort of your home.
  • Replace your HVAC filters so that your heating system works more efficiently through the cool fall and winter months.
  • Start recycling!  A lot of energy goes into the creation of all of the products in your home, from your appliances to the food that you eat.

Ready to make your home more energy-efficient for Energy Action Month?  It’s time to start recycling!  Each of the products we use requires energy to create – from obtaining the resources, to it’s manufacturing, to the delivery to the store and then to your home – everything that we buy requires energy.  By recycling, we can help reduce this cycle and in turn, reduce our energy use.
