Easy Ways to Reduce Your Environmental Impact This Back-to-School Season
Posted on August 21st, 2017 by Residential Waste Systems
Back-to-School season is here! Before you know it, you’ll be watching the kids get on the school bus for their first day. As we start things off fresh — why not take this as an opportunity to reduce your environmental impact, too? Here are a few ways that you and your kids can be more eco-friendly as we head into the new school year.
Eco-Friendly Tips for the School Year:
- Re-Use Supplies from Last Year – Do you have any durable binders and folders lying around the house? Re-use them! If they are looking a bit worn, dress them up with your favorite printed duct tape and craft supplies. You can repurpose old supplies and make them new again.
- Bring Your Own Lunch – Instead of relying on school lunches — bring your own! Have kids pick out their favorite reusable lunch bag (not a paper bag), and pack them a lunch. If you want to go the extra mile, pack lunch with food from your local farmer’s market.
- Buy FSC Certified Supplies – For the supplies you do need to buy, purchase Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified supplies. The FSC certifies that the wood and paper back-t0-school supply you are purchasing was grown in a responsibly managed forest.
- Take the Bus (or walk) – Public transportation is a great way to make back-to-school season more eco-friendly — and kids will get to spend time with their friends! If you live close enough to the school and they are old enough, consider letting them walk home from school after class is over.
